She wanted to go out on a proper date. I hung up the phone and stared at it long after the screen went black.

For the first time in years, the idea of a real date, especially one with a woman I actually enjoyed, filled me with joy instead of dread. I couldn’t think of anything I’d like more than going out with her.

Most importantly, it would make her happy, and with every cell in my whole body, the only thing I wanted in the world was to make Jessie happy.

Damn.

And if that wasn’t an indication that this woman was getting under my skin, I’m not sure what was.

The date had to be special. More than special. It had to be perfect.

But that was a problem because I had no idea how to date, let alone how to make a date perfect. I glanced around. My eyes landed first on Kenny, who was always nearby. He really was the best assistant and would do everything in his power—which, when paired with my credit card, was substantial—to work just the right magic. But it wouldn’t be enough. I turned where I stood, and my eyes landed on Brittany.

Yes.

Sure, she was suspicious of me and my intentions with her friend; she’d made that much perfectly clear. But that was more the reason why it was perfect. Brittany would know exactly how to make it an amazing date and more importantly, she’d want it to be amazing.

“Brittany!”

She jumped at my bellow, but quickly composed herself.

She held her leather portfolio against her chest and walked slowly toward me. “I didn’t realize it was time for the next meeting.”

“It’s not.” I glanced at my watch but didn’t really look at it. Suddenly I didn’t care about the stupid merger. It wasn’t important. Not like Jessie. “But I need your help.”

Instantly, she narrowed her eyes. “Jessie?” She shook her head and started to back away. “I don’t want to get involved in this, Shane. Not anymore than I already am. It’s bad enough that I…” She gestured between the two of us. “I don’t like lying to my friend. And not telling her who you are, well…I agreed not to, but—”

“No, no.” I stopped her before she could talk herself into telling Jessie my name. I already knew that I’d tell her, but not yet. I needed this first. And then… “It’s not like that, Brittany. This will only be a good thing for Jessie. And I do appreciate you keeping my secret for a little bit longer. I promise you there’s a very good reason I’m keeping my identity from her, and it won’t be much longer.”

She eyed me.

“Really,” I said. “I’m going to tell her soon. I just need to know she feels the same way about me that I feel about her. I’m falling in love with her, and I don’t want to mess it up.”

There was no one more surprised by my words than I was, but as soon as they slipped out, I knew it was true.
